    The center is named after the promoter of the National Parks Act 1916, responsible for the park was the first of the Mountain of Covadonga in 1918, the predecessor of the National Park Picos de Europa.

    At the reception center is a space dedicated to the life and history of Pedro Pidal, Marquis of Villaviciosa, versatile and adventurous character, great connoisseur of these mountains and ahead of his time.

    Covadonga Museum

    In this museum visitors can see and learn the history of this historic shrine from the legendary battle with which began the Reconquista, initiated by Don Pelayo (Founder of the Monarchy), as well as the various changes it has undergone over of its history.

    Of enormous value are the crown of the Virgin of Covadonga and Child, created by the jeweler ovetense Buylla Félix Granda in 1918, year of the canonical coronation of the Virgin. They are made of platinum, gold, diamonds, rubies, sapphires, France roses, diamonds and pearls. These parts are only used in Covadonga day on 8 September.

    Mannerist style is the ivory Christ sixteenth century, it belonged to San Francisco de Paula, and later to King Philip II, who donated it to the shrine of Covadonga.

    Covadonga in the museum are also reproductions of the drawings, which made for the project of the Basilica, the architect Ventura Rodriguez.

    Del Pintor Madrazo an impressive picture of Rey Pelayo is exposed.

    Besides numerous works of jewelry and liturgical clothing, as the breastplate of San Melchor de Quirós and mantle and embroidered white silk dress, donated to the Virgin of Covadonga by Queen Elizabeth II.

    Buxu Cave


    Buxu Cave has a rich representation of parietal art belonging to the Solutrean and early Magdalenian. In the cave paintings and engravings of horses, goats, deer, bison… with geometric and zoomorphic figures combine.
    Also, Buxu cave has a large sample of different manifestations of movable art, featuring a sculpture of a carved on the tusk of a bear and a plaque of limestone carved with different motifs bird. The cave was discovered in 1916 and declared monument in 1985.

    • Visits passes at 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 13:15 hours. (Wednesday to Sunday)
    • Monday and Tuesday.
    • Capacity 25 visitors per day.
    • Access to children under 7 years old are not allowed.

  • Hermitage of Santa Cruz



    The dolmen of the Holy Cross stands on a plain near the confluence of the rivers Sella and Güeña. It is a funerary monument of the year 4000 BC, formed by an artificial mound inside which a sepulchral chamber composed of several stone slabs is located.

    This building was razed to the ground, like the tumulus covering the megalithic monument in 1936. The current chapel and tomb are therefore of modern construction.

    Aula of the Kingdom of Asturias

    The Aula of the Kingdom of Asturias is located in the ancient Church of Cangas de Onis, in the neighborhood of Cangas above.

    This building still retains a head of the fifteenth century. The rest belongs to an extension made in the eighteenth century.

    In the visit to the Aula of the Kingdom of Asturias, we can take a tour of the history of the Astur monarchy, especially stopping at Kings held court in Cangas de Onis. With explanatory panels, audiovisual material and a virtual model explains the visitor the scope and significance of the Asturian monarchy in the history of Spain.

    Tourist Gate of Picos de Europa


    The Tourist Gate of Picos de Europa located in Casa Riera offers a tour of its three floors. In the first situation data, size and population of the city offered, the topography of the municipality is represented with a model and a large graphic panel with tourism in other nearby councils exposed.

    On the second floor concentrates information concerning natural and historical heritage of the municipality. The visitor will find a simulation of a cave where some reconstructions of the most representative archaeological remains will be exposed.

    The tour of the historic heritage does not end here. Visitors can access the apse of the property where the photos about the architectural heritage accompanied by a soundtrack of Gregorian chants that create an almost mystical atmosphere are projected. Already in the exit corridor leading to the plant under cover it is a historical frieze that brings together the most outstanding events and contextualizes the most emblematic places from a chronological view. On leaving this place, a photograph of a pastor invited to climb the stairs leading to the top floor, dedicated to ethnography. This latter area is about habits, customs and traditions and which projects on the development of audiovisual Gamonéu and pottery.
